WICCAN
/ PAGAN SYMBOLS OUTLINED
The following
are symbols used in Wicca. Most of the symbols you will find
here have been around for ages. Wiccans use a collaboration
of symbols from other Pagan religions that they have adopted for
their own. Therefore, these are not just Wiccan symbols, but
universal symbols from other walks of life.
|
PENTACLE &
PENTAGRAM |
Other
names: |
Five-pointed star. Star of the Microcosm.
Witch's Foot. The Morning Star. The Evening
Star. Endless knot. The Wild Rose. |
General: |
The
five-pointed star within a circle is the most common Pagan
symbol, and it is typically used to identify oneself as a
Pagan or Wiccan. The five points represent the 4 elements
plus the spirit, and the circle connects them all. A
five-pointed star without the circle is sometimes called a
pentagram, rather than a pentacle. Based on numerology, the
five points means the pentacle symbolizes the Earth element
and can be used as an Earth symbol on an altar. Pentacle and
pentagram are commonly used interchangeably. |
History: |
Pentacle
- The five-pointed star is the result of astrological
research done over 6,000 years ago resulting in no
connection whatsoever to Satanism or Christianity.
Pythagoras utilized the Pentacle to represent the human
being with the points of the star representing the head,
arms and legs, adding the circle unifies and creates Spirit.
On a side note, the Pentacle or Pentagram represents phi:
1.618, the perfect number. This number symbolizes
perfection in all things that exist on this plane, for one
instance, the human face, broken down in shape has the basic
core and structure of a Pentagram. How's that for
perfection?
Pentagram
- The Pentagram represents the five elements and was
therefore used as a Yule tree topper in ancient Celtic
Traditions, hence the star on top of the Christmas Tree. |
The
Elements: |
The
Pentacle represents the five elements of Earth, Air, Fire,
Water, and Spirit. |
Magickal Uses: |
As a
protective device: Wear a pentacle around your neck to
protect yourself.
It is a
sign of secrecy and can be drawn upon your Book of Shadows
or your Altar Box in which you store all your Ritual
materials. |
Ritual
Use: |
A
Pentacle is synonymous with Wiccan Rituals. It
represents Spirit and Protection. A Pentacle is one of
the most important devices in your Ritual Circle and can be
simply represented by drawing a Pentacle in the air above
your working space, in the dirt if working outside, or on a
piece of paper to be discarded later. |
|
EYE OF HORUS |
General: |
The Eye
of Horus can be a bit of a confusing symbol. It is seen
sometimes as the right or sometimes as the left eye. The
left eye is Eye of Horus and is connected with the moon.
When it's the right eye, it's the Eye of Ra, and associated
with the sun. Though some sources say there is no
distinction at all. The Eye represents the eye that was lost
by Horus when he fought with Seth over the murder of his
father, Osiris. The symbol is worn for for protection and to
ward off evil spirits.
|
|
SPIRIT CIRCLE |
History: |
The
Spirit Circle is not just useful to Wiccans, in many
cultural histories a person would walk around an object,
person, or place during a ceremony of birth, marriage or
death, or to bring good luck or destroy evil. |
The
Elements: |
Earth,
Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit |
Magickal Uses: |
A Spirit
Circle can be used in place of a Pentacle. |
Ritual
Use: |
The
Spirit Circle represents walking or casting of the Ritual
Circle. All Rituals call for the casting of a circle
and calling of quarters to seal and create a sacred working
environment for the Witch. |
|
TRIPLE CIRCLE |
Ritual
Use: |
In
Ritual, the Triple Circle is used to call upon the Triple
Goddess: Maiden, Mother, and Crone. This gives power
to your Ritual Circle by boosting the body, mind, and
spirit. |
|
TRIPLE MOON |
Other
names: |
The
Goddess (see also Goddess) |
History: |
The
Triple Moon has been associated with the life of the
Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone. As the moon waxes,
becomes full then wanes, it is a never ending cycle which
also represents life. It is also associated with
feminine energy, mystery and psychic abilities. You often
see this symbol on crowns or other head-pieces, particularly
worn by High Priestesses. |
The
Elements: |
Goddess |
Magickal Uses: |
Some
Wiccans use this symbol to simply indicate their walk of
life, whether it be on a necklace or t-shirt. |
Ritual
Use: |
This
symbol can be placed anywhere on your altar to signify the
turns of life, birth, living and death or also our great
Mother or any Female Deity you wish to connect with. |
|
HORNED GOD |
Other
names: |
Green
Man |
History: |
The
Horned God represents the male aspect in Wicca and is as old
as the Goddess herself. Represents the masculine polarity of
the universe. |
The
Elements: |
God.
Nature. |
Magickal Uses: |
Can be
worn as a necklace to subtly represent your belief in Wicca. |
Ritual
Use: |
The
Horned God is wonderful in ritual when you want to celebrate
a male deity. When used together with the Triple Moon,
it perfectly represents the nature of opposites. |
|
HEPTAGRAM |
Other
names: |
Seven
pointed star. The Star of Venus. Septagram. Faery
star. Elven star. |
General: |
The
number seven corresponds to the spirit realm, which is why
this symbol is associated with elves or fairies. There are
no set representations for each of the points, but they are
sometimes labelled: earth, air, fire, water, above, below
and within. The septagram is also associated with astrology
because the classical view of the sky contained seven
planets. |
History: |
The
original basis for the heptagram came from astrology and the
seven known planets of the time along with the seven days of
the week. The heptagram, for modern day Wiccans,
represents the distribution of the planetary energies
through the seven days of the week. The Heptagram has
also been adopted as the symbol for magic in the Faerie
Wicca traditions. |
The
Elements: |
Sun,
Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn |
Magickal Uses: |
Can be
engraved or painted on your Book of Shadows to defend and
protect the contents inside. |
Ritual
Use: |
Used to
calculate planetary hours. In ritual, each planet
holds specific elements and energies (see charts below) and
the heptagram can help focus those energies on a specific
planet. |
|
CELTIC CROSS |
History: |
The
history of the Celtic Cross is a mishmash of information
that is difficult to sort through and is also difficult to
find the true history. Following is as close to
history and the truth that we could get without writing a
book and spending years researching. From a Pagan's
standpoint the history goes something like this: These
crosses started out as a simple circle representing the
moon. When Christian's came to convert the Druids,
they used symbols, which in their case was the cross.
They drew the cross into the circle to show that their
religion was of higher value, thus creating the "Celtic
Cross." On another note from Paganism: The circle
again represents the moon, while the cross or four lines
intersecting represent the sun. Therefore, the Druids
were worshipping the sun and the moon. The Christians
and Catholics claim it is has always been a symbol of their
religion, however to prove a point on the Pagan side,
Christianity is a new religion, while Druids have been
around for centuries. Still others, claim it as a
phallic symbol. You be the judge. |
The
Elements: |
Sun and
Moon |
Magickal Uses: |
Can be
used for beautiful decoration as most Wiccans celebrate the
Celts and their beautiful artwork. |
Ritual
Use: |
Use to
represent the Sun and Moon, God and Goddess, or Male and
Female |
|
ALCHEMY |
Meaning: |
"Alchemy
is a bridge between Earth and Heaven, matter and spirit, the
solid and the fluid, the visible and the invisible, bringing
the horizontal and the vertical together." ~ J. Ramsay.
Alchemy, in short, is to turn thought into matter. By
focusing on the following symbols of alchemy, one is said to
reach a goal such as a change in life. It is how you,
as a Wiccan use this symbol to enrich and engage yourself in
your Ritual. Alchemy, if studied and practiced hard
enough has been said to turn lead into gold. |

binding link over all four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and
Water. It is created by calling all these elements
together into one circle. The Element of Spirit is
used when you want to call upon a specific deity.
This symbol is drawn by uniting the Fire and Water
symbols, but you will also notice the air and earth
elements are also naturally contained in the symbol. |
|
ANKH |
General: |
The
short and traditional meaning for the ankh symbol is
"everlasting life". This symbol is a hieroglyph seen in
countless ancient Egyptian carvings, usually held in
hand by Gods and pharaohs to show how they preside over
life (in other words, are immortal). In these images,
the ankh is held by the loop rather than the base. The
ankh is a popular symbol among Pagans, likely due to the
similarity to a Christian cross which makes the ankh
much less shocking to others, as compared to a pentacle. |
|
TRIQUETRA |
General: |
Like the triskele, this Celtic symbol embodies the
sacred number 3, as seen in the 3 phases of the
Goddess (maiden, mother, crone) and the 3 elements of
nature (land, sky, sea). During the period of early
Christianity, the triquetra took on further meaning as
the Holy Trinity. |
|
GODDESS |
General: |
This familiar symbol is a simplified silhouette
of a paleolithic Egyptian mother Goddess, probably a
prototype of the Goddess Isis, and is often used to
symbolize the "Lady," the feminine deity of Wicca. |
|
WHEEL OF THE YEAR |
General: |
The eight-pointed Wheel of the Year
symbol marks the important holy days, or Sabbats, in
the Wiccan Ritual calendar. It is derived from the
sun wheel, or solar cross, a pre-Christian European
calendar marking the Solstices and Equinoxes. |
|
WITCHES SIGN |
General: |
The so-called Witch's Sign is used
in some traditions to mark ritual tools. It is
similar to the solar cross, but its exact origin is
unknown (It is similar to the Roman numeral
thirteen, and reader suggests this may represent the
coven of thirteen members) (Similar devices were
used in the medieval period to mark time) |
|
SPIRAL - Spirituality & Rebirth |
General: |
The spiral is probably the oldest symbol of human
spirituality. It has been found scratched into
rocks from thousands of years ago, on every
continent in the world. The religious significance
can only be guessed, but it has been found on
tombs, and possibly has a connection with the sun-
the sun makes a spiral shape every three months in
its travels. In modern times, the spiral is still
spiritually significant. It is the symbol of
spirit in Wicca, an emblem of the Goddess.
Beginning
on the right, the spiral represents Spirituality
Beginning
on the left, the spiral also represents rebirth |
|
CAULDRON |
General: |
The Cauldron is drawn from ancient Celtic
mythology, and is sometimes called the Cup or
Cauldron of Cerridwen. As a Wiccan ritual tool, it
is mostly symbolic. Most often used to represent
the fire or water elements, the cauldron is
sometimes employed for scrying, for mixing herbs,
for consecration, or to hold the ingredients for a
spell. It is generally held to be a feminine
symbol. |
|
YONIC |
General: |
The word yoni is the Sanskrit word for the 'female
reproductive organ'. Translated directly into
English, it could mean vulva or vagina. It also
has a wider meaning in religious and spiritual
contexts, where its meaning is 'creativity'. The
yoni is also considered to be symbolic of Shakti
or other goddesses of a similar nature. |
The Sigil, Sigils, or Siglia
Magic symbols are often referred to as
sigils. The
word sigil
stems from the Latin
sigilum
meaning seal.
Sigils or Siglia are symbols that have been created for a
specific magickal purpose and are used to form a glyph,
composed of a variety of symbols or concepts which carry
intent and inherent iconic meaning. Through iconography,
emblems, symbols, and the symbolism of tattoos, the ankh,
glyphs, and the Sigilia common in Jewish mysticism and
Kabbalistic magic have been, for the most part, successfully
decoded.

Yin and Yang
This
Symbol (Yin-Yang) represents the ancient Chinese understanding of how
things work. The outer circle represents "everything", while the black
and white shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two
energies, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white), which cause
everything to happen. They are not completely black or white, just as
things in life are not completely black or white, and they cannot exist
without each other.
While "yin" would be
dark, passive, downward, cold, contracting, and weak, "yang" would be
bright, active, upward, hot, expanding, and strong. The shape of the yin
and yang sections of the symbol, actually gives you a sense of the
continual movement of these two energies, yin to yang and yang to yin,
causing everything to happen: just as things expand and contract, and
temperature changes from hot to cold.
"Yin and
yang are considered to be opposites. Yin represents eternity, dark,
feminine, left side of the body, etc. Yang is its opposite and
represents history, light, masculine, right side of the body, etc.''
"Yang is male, positive, and represented by the Sun. Yin is female,
negative, and represented by the Moon,'' says Paul E. Desautels in The
Gem Kingdom.
"The symbol
itself dates back at least to the fourth century B.C., and has been
identified with the Eastern philosophical religions of Confucianism,
Buddhism, and Taoism. In the Western world it has long been adopted into
the symbolism of myth, magic, astrology, and witchcraft.
A book,
Black Magic, White Magic, explains the Yin-Yang like this:
"Another
ancient magical sign called the yin-and-yang first appeared sometime
before the 3rd century B.C. in China. This emblem became a favourite of
sorcerers and mystics throughout the Orient because it, too, embodies so
many possible meanings.
One
well-known witch, Sybil Leek, who is called the "mistress of the
occult," proclaims that the Yin-Yang theory is:
"...an idea
that inspired such things as Chinese boxing, breath control [used in
yoga, meditation, etc.], the use of special herbs, and some rather
erotic sexual exercises designed to nourish the Yang with the Yin?
She adds:
"Crucial to Taoism is the idea of Yin and Yang.''
"According
to the ancient Chinese philosophers, in the beginning was Tao. But then
Tao separated into the two prime principles, yang and yin. And from the
many combinations of yang and yin everything else that is in the world
has emerged.
"Yang and
yin produced the 'five elements', which are metal, wood, fire, water and
earth. Everything in life is in a constant state of flux; in fact, the
only thing that you can be sure of is that it will change."
Another book
states:
"The
Yang-Yin symbol is one of the easiest to recognise and understand. It
represents the two opposite, conflicting forces found in every action,
and which are responsible for the dynamic universe....The Yang and Yin
operate in the universe primarily through the agency of the five
elements: Earth (Saturn), Water (Mercury), Metal (Venus), Wood
(Jupiter), and Fire (Mars). These elements under the guidance of the
five planets form, with the Sun and Moon, the seven rulers. Each of the
elements may also be Yang or Yin, so that combinations of all these
could produce broad number possibilities (sic) and astrological
alternatives. Each, of course, has its symbol which can be, and often
was, incised into jade.''
The concept
of yin and yang (also called Tai-gi-tu), likewise plays an important
role in many other occult practices. For instance, the Dictionary of
Mysticism states the following about the practice of shu shu:
"Shu shu:
The ancient Chinese system of magic, divination and occult practices,
including astrology, dream interpretation, the art of co-ordinating
human affairs by the active and passive principles of the universe (yin
yang) and the Five Elements (wu hsing), fortune telling by the use of
the stalks of the divination plant and the tortoise shell, and
miscellaneous methods such as dream interpretation, the regulation of
forms and shapes of buildings, etc.''
Of course,
many of the Chinese exercises, medical practices, etc., are also based
on the theory of yin and yang. In Health: A Holistic Approach we find:
"The
techniques of acupuncture, acupressure, and moxibustion apply needle,
pressure, or thermal (heat) stimulation respectively to meridian points
to effect a change in the orderly flow of Chi through the meridians.
This treatment helps to re-establish the yin-yang balance by initiating
normal energy flow in stagnant meridians. The choice of meridian points
to be stimulated is arrived at by using specific laws derived directly
from the five-element theory and knowing the order of Chi distribution
in the meridians. The five-element theory is the practical, tangible
application of the complementary opposites--yin and yang.
"The Chinese
system of physiotherapy, or therapeutic exercises, is represented
primarily in the practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, which is a system of
exercises performed in close co-ordination with regulated breathing. The
exercises are comprised of thirty-seven movement patterns, the
composition of which is regulated by the principles of yin and yang.
"The
philosophy of T'ai Chi Ch'uan is rooted in Taoism, which advocates
natural effort, and in the I Ching, or Book of Changes. The movements
and inner teachings are derived from the complementary relationship
between Yin and Yang, two fundamental forces that create and harmonise
the Universe by their interaction.
The concepts of Yin and Yang and the Five Agents
provided the intellectual framework of much of Chinese scientific
thinking especially in fields like biology and medicine The organs of
the body were seen to be interrelated in the same sorts of ways as other
natural phenomena, and best understood by looking for correlations and
correspondences. Illness was seen as a disturbance in the balance of Yin
and Yang or the Five Agents caused by emotions, heat or cold, or other
influences. Therapy thus depended on accurate diagnosis of the source of
the imbalance.
The earliest surviving medical texts are fragments
of manuscript from early Han tombs. Besides general theory, these texts
cover drugs, gymnastics, minor surgery, and magic spells. The text which
was to become the main source of medical theory also apparently dates
from the Han. It is the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine, supposed
to have been written during the third millennium BCE by the mythical
Yellow Emperor. A small portion of it is given below.....
The Yellow Emperor said ''The principle of Yin and
Yang is the foundation of the entire universe. It underlies everything
in creation. It brings about the development of parenthood; it is the
root and source of life and death it is found with the temples of the
gods In order to treat and cure diseases one must search for their
origins.
"Heaven was created by the concentration of Yang,
the force of light, earth was created by the concentration of Yin, the
forces of darkness. Yang stands for peace and serenity; Yin stands for
confusion and turmoil. Yang stands for destruction; Yin stands for
conservation. Yang brings about disintegration; Yin gives shape to
things....
The pure and lucid element of light is manifested
in the upper artifices and the turbid element of darkness is manifested
in the lower orifices. Yang, the element of light, originates in the
pores. Yin, the element of darkness, moves within the five viscera. Yang
the lucid force of light truly is represented by the four extremities-
and Yin the turbid force of darkness stores the power of the six
treasures of nature. Water is an embodiment of Yin as fire is an
embodiment of Yang. Yang creates the air, while Yin creates the senses,
which belong to the physical body When the physical body dies, the
spirit is restored to the air, its natural environment. The spirit
receives its nourishment through the air, and the body receives its
nourishment through the senses
"If Yang is overly powerful, then Yin may be too
weak. If Yin is particularly strong, then Yang is apt to be defective If
the male force is overwhelming, then there will be excessive heat. If
the female force is overwhelming, then there will be excessive cold.
Exposure to repeated and severe heat will induce chills. Cold injures
the body while heat injures the spirit When the spirit is hurt, severe
pain will ensue. When the body is hurt, there will be swelling. Thus,
when severe pain occurs first and swelling comes on later, one may infer
that a disharmony in the spirit has done harm to the body. Likewise,
when swelling appears first and severe pain is felt later on, one can
say that a dysfunction in the body has injured the spirit....
"Nature has four seasons and five elements. To
grant long life, these seasons and elements must store up the power of
creation in cold, heat, dryness, moisture, and wind. Man has five
viscera in which these five climates are transformed into joy, anger,
sympathy, grief. and fear. The emotions of joy and anger are injurious
to the spirit just as cold and heat are injurious to the body. Violent
anger depletes Yin; violent joy depletes Yang. When rebellious emotions
rise to Heaven the pulse expires and leaves the body When joy and anger
are without moderation, then cold and heat exceed all measure, and life
is no longer secure. Yin and Yang should be respected to an equal
extent.
The Yellow Emperor asked, "Is there any
alternative to the law of Yin and Yang?"
Qi Bo answered: "When Yang is the stronger, the
body is hot, the pores are closed, and people begin to pant; they become
boisterous and coarse and do not perspire. They become feverish, their
mouths are dry and sore, their stomachs feel tight, and they die of
constipation. When Yang is the stronger, people can endure winter but
not summer. When Yin is the stronger, the body is cold and covered with
perspiration. People realize they are ill; they tremble and feel chilly.
When they feel chilled, their spirits become rebellious. Their stomachs
can no long digest food and they die. When Yin is stronger, people can
endure summer but not winter. Thus Yin and Yang alternate. Their ebbs
and surges vary, and so does the character of the diseases."
The Yellow Emperor asked, "Can anything be done to
harmonize and adjust these two principles of nature?" Qi Bo answered:
"If one has the ability to know the seven injuries and the eight
advantages, one can bring the two principles into harmony. If one does
not know how to use this knowledge, his life will be doomed to early
decay. By the age of forty the Yin force in the body has been reduced to
one-half of its natural vigor and an individual's youthful prowess has
deteriorated. By the age of fifty the body has grown heavy. The ears no
longer hear well. The eyes no longer see clearly By the age of sixty the
life producing power of Yin has declined to a very low level. Impotence
sets in The nine orifices no longer benefit each other....
Those who seek wisdom beyond the natural limits
will retain good hearing and clear vision. Their bodies will remain
light and strong. Although they grow old in years, they will stay
able-bodied and vigorous and be capable of governing to great advantage.
For this reason the ancient sages did not rush into the affairs of the
world. In their pleasures and joys they were dignified and tranquil.
They did what they thought best and did not bend their will or ambition
to the achievement of empty ends Thus their allotted span of life was
without limit, like that of Heaven and earth. This is the way the
ancient sages controlled and conducted themselves.
"By observing myself I learn about others, and
their diseases become apparent to me. By observing the external
symptoms, I gather knowledge about the internal diseases One should
watch for things out of the ordinary One should observe minute and
trifling things and treat them as if the were big and important. When
they are treated the danger they pose will be dissipated. Experts in
examining patients judge their general appearance; they feel their pulse
and determine whether it is Yin or Yang that causes the disease.... To
determine whether Yin or Yang predominates, one must be able to
distinguish a light pulse of low tension from a hard. pounding one With
a disease of Yang, Yin predominates With a disease of Yin, Yang
predominates When one is filled with vigor and strength, Yin and Yang
are in proper harmony.
